Volunteer with us (new draft)

The volunteers at Feed My City are extremely important. Without their kindness and generosity, the essential work Feed My City carries out, would be unachievable.

With the demand for our service growing, we are always looking for more people to join our Feed My City family. So if you would like to help Feed My City feed those in need, please look at our volunteer roles and see what you would like to get involved with. Fill out our simple form and we’ll be in contact.

Call Handling

As a call handler, you will receive calls from our clients for collection or delivery, and forward this request to our other volunteers.

The main call handler will take most of the calls. If the main call handler cannot take a particular call, it will automatically trip down to the backup call handler, who will take a small number of calls. Each call lasts around 2-5 minutes.

This role is great for people who would like to help people get food from their own home.

Note: the evening call handler will receive far fewer calls than a daytime call handler, but those calls are no less important and may be more urgent.

Cook

As a cook at Feed My City, you will help cook and pack the emergency meals that will be given to our clients. These meals are typically a chickpea-lentil curry with rice, a chickpea-pasta dish, or jacket potatoes with beans.
You will then wash the dishes and do some light cleaning (sweeping up, mopping, etc.).

No previous cooking experience is required, and you will be taught/given everything you need.

Hot Meal Driver

Feed My City - Hot Food Driver

10 am – 2 pm – Monday to Friday

As a hot meal driver, you would need to come to our base in Beswick between 10 am and 11 am to collect the hot meals. We would then provide you with the locations for delivery and the contact details of the recipients.

Depending on your availability and the number of deliveries we have, carrying out the deliveries would take between 2 and 3 hours.

Dry Bag Driver

Feed My City - Dry Bag Driver

No specific time, whenever you can.

Our dry bag drivers receive around 5 dry bags from us at a time, which they store at home. Then, when there is a delivery request in their local area, one of our admins will text/ring them asking if they can deliver. If they can deliver, great! If not, no need to worry.

They can deliver any time that day, between 9 am and 9 pm, so it’s very flexible. And each request takes about 20-30 minutes in total.

Deliveries are done ad-hoc. To set expectations, you might be asked 1-3 times per week to deliver.

This role is a great way to help people get emergency food even if you don’t have much free time. It accommodates a wide variety of schedules, whether you work a 9-5 job, on shifts, or have other commitments.

Van team

Dry Bag Packers

Our dry bag team pack our emergency dry food bags, ensuring that they’re ready for collection/delivery. They will also do some light tidying/cleanng.

The deep clean team come in for a couple of hours on any day of the week to help give our kitchen a clean and tidy ready for the busy week ahead.

The timing of this is extremely flexible, and Feed My City will work around the availability of the volunteer team.
